Sunday Playlist: A Winter

A Winter

Despite I'm still not a working person who works it's ass off from monday morning till friday night (still finishing slowly that thesis) but a student who's days are in fact all to take as they come, I still consider my sundays as holy days of doing absolutely nothing. The only things on my sunday activities list are: waking up slowly, go for a small jog or workout if my lazy body is supportive, wander around the house wrapped in a fleece blanket, snuggle with a good read next to my window (and preferably watch the snow fall as it does today) and since this very sunday make a sunday playlist.

Ten Golden Tunes For A Dreamy Winter Sunday.

concert: the XX

After what seemed to be ages I finally saw one of my favorite bands, the XX,perform yesterday night. I remember discovering them in the cold winter of 2010 and they immediately hypnotized me with their moving lyrics and minimalistic arrangements always underlined by a heart-skipping-beat and mesmerizing bass line.

I was a bit frightened that a big scary arena would make their sound less fantasic than it sounded in my head but after singing the first song a bit hesitantly (Romy Madley Croft) they totally nailed the rest of the gig. Jamie Smith (behind the decks and drums)made us even shake our heads I-love-techno wise from time to time. Quote of the evening by frontman Oliver Sim  "I never thought an arena could be so quiet... I like it"  made me like them even more. They have such a large audience worldwide but nonetheless they were so humble, thanking us so much for our support the past years. No drama or big rockstar behaviour at all. Haaa, performances like that make life even better. I'm hypnotized and humming the XX tunes for the next couple of day.

Glaciers have melted to the sea
I wish the tide would take me over
I've been down on my knees
and you just keep on getting closer

Here's the mesmerizing song "intro" performed yesterday night. Excuse-my-french for the bad quality:

▲Radiohead in Concert▲

I'm still tripping on yesterdays Radiohead concert. I can't get over the fact that it was so so so fucking awesome. Even though I didn't get to the center and just sat on a chair from where Thom Yorke looked like a tiny hyperkinetic dancing ant, it still was A M A Z I N G.

[Tuesday Tune] Bat For Lashes - Laura

Your name is tattooed on every boy's skin.
Laura you're more than a superstar.
You say that you're stuck in a pale blue dream

Delicate new single of Bat For Lashes new album. Dedicated to a certain "Laura" with a self-destroying party lifestyle. Bit cliché, but nonetheless this song is all WONDER !

She's coming to Belgium again in november. Last time I saw her perform (at AB in Brussels in 2009 on a halloweennight), I was amazed by the on stage energy of this artist. She definitely belongs in the category of all those music muse power women like Florence + the Machine, Kate Bush, Fever Ray, Zola Jesus, Björk...
I think I might consider going again...

Friday Favourites.

"This music video was crafted to be reminiscent of a movie trailer: A visual preview of how the this track feels and continues to sound beyond the time constraints of the video."

Happy Friday the 13 th!
Haven't experienced more traumatic daily happenings than the usual so far...

Radiohead.

That friday morning I had promised Charis to set my alarm and wake up at nine to make sure we got our hands on tickets for the radiohead concert in october. So while I was slowly preparing my lazy friday morning breakfast in the kitchen ( in total zen modus ) around 9.20 AM it suddenly hit me like a rock, the tickets!!! I rushed back upstairs, mueslibowl and coffeemug in hands, sincerely hoping that I still had a shot at buying them. After some nervewrecking minutes watching the buyers page reload and reload and reload, I finally got them!

So far so good, next challenge is to learn Thom's choreography  on Lotus Flower by heart by october 18th.  Sweet.

Radiohead music always brings out some dark and heavy mood in me and and maybe weird but despite that fact I really enjoy listening to them. Their music creates that stream of unconscious thoughts on which you float away from reality on busy days like these. I spent to much time not listening to them over the past months. So if you see me wandering by, head in clouds, I'm not on drugs but dancing Lotus Flower in my head.

There's an empty space inside my heart
where the weeds take root
so now I'll set you free
I'll set you free.

Twunch and Miike Snow Pre-listening @ Bar Buro

At last my friends at last, a non thesis-drama related blogpost!Let me explain.
Last night I joined Deborah and her twitter gang on a twunch.
Excuse my french, twunch, c'est quoi ça? Twuch is lunch (or in this case dinner) twitter-style where twitter peeps gather around to talk about the stuff that make them tick or just about random shizzle. You can check all the twunch meetings here and subscribe to them with your twitter account if you would like to join.

At first, I thought it would be awkward for me (=social media rookie) to join a twunch, but as I find myself more and more interested in the power of sites like twitter, facebook or pinterest, I decided to give it a shot.

Sony Music Belgium organised this twunch as a pre-listening session to  Miike Snow his newest album "Happy To You". For sure you heard "Paddling Out" the last couple of weeks popping through your radio and after hearing the rest of the album I am strongly convinced there will be more Miike Snow tunes that will make your mood springproof in the future. But don't be mistaken, the lyrics are rather dark and some songs are even a bit dramatic like "Devil's Work" (up to the point where I could hear a horn go off in a song) and they even hired Lykke Li's sweet voice to do a verse on the track "Black Tin Box". It will be released March 16 but you can check it here.

The event took place in Bar Buro, a new pop up bar in Ghent, powered by chocolate bar Quetzal and Avenue L. So we were spoiled with quite original smoked salmon-rucola-chocolate drop panini's and moelleux (I die!) for dessert.  I'm still enjoying the afterglow of that chocolate inspired meal while listening to Miike Snow his happy electropop album (we got a copy to take home, yay!). I really hope to see them on the festivals this summer.

And the twunch thing? I'm looking forward to my next one. The only thing I have to overcome is my fear of getting my prehistorical mobile phone out of my pocket. Quite intimidating if you're surrounded by a dozen of foursquaring and twittering Iphone ninja's :-). Still, I'm proud to posses a historical artifact mobile device.

Blue Jeans. White Shirt.

Blue Jeans. White Shirt.
Walked into the room,
you know you made my eyes burn.
It was like, James Dean.
For sure.
You're so fresh to death,
and sick as ca- cancer.

Lana Del Rey. Drama Queen with dark heart attitude. Love the lyrics, love the vintage edge of her music. This one is a keeper.

You were sorta punk rock. I grew up on hip hop.
But you fit me beter than my favourite sweater.

And I know that love is mean, And love hurts.
But I still remember that day we met in December...

Music Monday.

Dear Lovers of the art form called "Bootie shaking for Beginners" I strongly recommend you listening to this free album by american mash up musician, Girl Talk. Hard to stop your feet moving if this masterpiece is booming trough your speakers. The guy used over 350 other songs from other artist to sample this one track album. The record label Illegal Art offers to download the whole album for free on their site (link below). I bet even your grandmother would dance on this one.

Girl Talk with All Day (2010)

The link below is a site where you can see which artist/song is used every second of the album. Awesomeness for the real freaks.

Climbing up the walls.

Rainy day. So weird how everything turns sad and grey with a change in the weather. Perfect day to get a little silly because so many people allready left and the end of Erasmus is coming closer. Lien just left today, Sarah is leaving soon, Siri, Angi, Ana, Daniela, Ellen and Francois are all gone allready.Supagro looks now as if the place has been bombed and everyone just left in the middle of a party. The last week I had to study for some exams again. Luckily the studybreaks were hilarious. One night I escaped to town cuz I couldn't sleep and when I arrived downstairs in the garden there was all this commotion and police people. I asked someone what was going on (it was 1h30 at night so it was quite abnormal to see all these people talking in the hallway) and they explained some hobo's tried to break in our building to steal food. Yip, some people really have bad ideas. We also went to the saladbar and gave mental support to Lien who decided to get a nosepiercing.
Yesterday we baked pancakes (best thing to do when it rains) and went to take a look at FISE, a festival going on now in Montpellier with all kinds of extreme sports. The wakeboarding is amazing and the ramp for the mountainbike section is insane. http://fise-events.net/fr/
But the rain ruins a lot. Hopefully on sunday when the finals are taking place the weather will be nice.So now what to do? It's raining, the end is getting near, everyone's asleep, time to watch some silly movies (or study :-( boooeh)) and hope for the sun to come back soon.
