Move over cupcake, make room for the macaroon!

They're pretty, colourfull and scrumptious. From French origin and hyped all over the world thanks to series as Gossip Girl and chic french Vogue articles. It's macarons I'm talking about. These little pieces of joy are mainly made of icing sugar, sugar, egg whites and almond powder. They are filled with buttercream, ganache or jam.
There has been much discussion about it's origin: Italian or French? The word macaron is derived from "maccarone" or "maccherone" wich is derived from the italian verb "ammaccare", meaning to crush or beat. Refering to the crushing of almonds for the macarons principal ingredient, the almond paste.
Even US show, Gossip Girl, features them in their episodes.
The macaron has become a real craze and I can tell, in Montpellier you can buy them even at IKEA or Mc Donalds and in the US and Japan people pay crazy prices for LaDuree macarons.
Since I've been living in France now for 2 months I had to write about this little hyped pastries and I must admit that despite their exuberated price every now and then I  buy a little box of Macarons myself. Fashionhype or not, they taste like heaven.
